Reinstalling the portal on the MAG 424 box from scratch
The portal on a MAG 424 box is not an app you download — it is a web address the box fetches every time it boots. That means a clean reinstall is simply a matter of clearing the old address and typing a fresh one. The whole job takes a few minutes, and you will need the portal URL from the welcome e-mail your provider sent when you signed up, plus the MAC address printed on the label on the underside of the box. That is genuinely all.
This guide follows one realistic evening through the process: arriving home to a box that refuses to load, working through it calmly, and ending with a working picture.
Before you touch the box settings
Half of portal failures have nothing to do with the portal address itself. The MAG 424 runs over your home internet connection, so the first thing worth checking is whether anything else on the network is behaving oddly. If a phone or laptop is also sluggish, restart the router first and give it a moment to settle before you continue.
If the rest of the network is fine, check that the box itself has a valid IP address. Go to Settings → Network → Network info and look for a figure in the IP address field. A blank field or an address starting with 169 means the box has not connected to the router. In that case, go to Settings → Network → Wireless (or Wired, depending on how your box is connected) and run the connection wizard again before attempting anything with the portal.
One more thing: find the welcome e-mail from your provider before you open the portal settings. You will need the portal URL in front of you so you can type it without guessing.
Clearing the old portal address
On the MAG 424 remote, press the Setup button (the cog icon) while the box is on the home screen. Navigate to System settings, then scroll down to Servers, and select Portals.
You will see up to two portal slots. The active one will have an address in the Portal 1 URL field. Highlight that field, press OK, and delete the existing address character by character using the back arrow on the remote, or press the yellow button if your remote offers a 'clear field' shortcut. When the field is empty, do not press OK yet.
Leave the Portal 1 name field as it is — it is cosmetic and does not affect the connection. Focus only on the URL.

Common questions
- Will I lose my settings if I clear the portal address?
No. Clearing the portal URL only removes the address from that field. The box's network settings, parental controls and display preferences remain untouched. Once you enter the new address and reboot, everything else will be exactly as it was.
- My MAG 424 shows a loading spinner and never connects. Is the portal address wrong?
Not necessarily. A permanent spinner usually means the box is reaching the server but not getting a valid response, which can happen when the MAC address on the box does not match the one registered with your provider. Check the sticker on the underside of the box and ask your provider to confirm the address they have on file.
- Where do I find the portal URL if I have deleted the welcome e-mail?
Contact your provider directly — most respond quickly and will resend the details. The URL is specific to your account, so there is no way to retrieve it from the box itself once the field has been cleared.
- Do I need to reinstall anything else after entering a new portal address?
Nothing else needs reinstalling. The MAG 424 has no app layer to manage; the portal address is the entire setup, and once it is correct the box handles the rest automatically on each boot.
Entering the fresh portal address
With the Portal 1 URL field empty, press OK to open the on-screen keyboard. Type the portal address exactly as it appears in the e-mail: watch for http versus https, and check every dot and slash. A single character wrong will produce a blank screen or a loading spinner that never resolves.
Once you have entered the address, press OK to confirm, then scroll down and select OK at the bottom of the Portals screen to save. The box will return to the home screen.
Now press Home on the remote to trigger a portal reload, or restart the box entirely using Setup → Reboot. A full reboot is slower but tends to clear any lingering cache issues. Within a few seconds of coming back up, the box should fetch the portal and present the channel list.
If the picture loads but looks stretched or cropped, the sorting out aspect ratios and black bars at home guide covers the MAG display settings that fix that.
When the box still will not connect
If the portal address is correct and the network is healthy but the box still shows an error, the most likely culprit is a mismatch between the MAC address your provider has on record and the one the box is sending. This can happen if the box was replaced or reset at some point.
Turn the box over and read the MAC address from the white sticker on the base — it is a twelve-character string of letters and numbers, usually separated by colons. Compare it with the MAC address your provider has linked to your account. If they differ, contact your provider with the correct address from the sticker. They will update it on their side, and the portal will load on the next attempt.
For households where the box sits in a room some distance from the router, a weak Wi-Fi signal can also cause intermittent portal failures that look like configuration errors. A wired Ethernet cable between the box and a nearby powerline adapter usually resolves that completely.
Late-night viewing sometimes brings its own irritations beyond the portal itself — if audio levels are causing problems once everything is working again, the night modes for sound: the practical guide article has practical settings worth bookmarking.
